The institute examines how transnational immigration to California has been represented through literary, theatrical, and historical texts. Faculty include scholars as well as artists who are nationally and internationally renowned for their work on immigration. Activities include: field trips to locations around the San Francisco Bay Area, discussions with faculty, and workshops designed to engage the institute texts and topics they raise. The institute offers the study of a region (the SF Bay Area), and focuses largely on Afghan, Chinese, Filipino, Indian, Iranian, Mexican, and Vietnamese immigrant experiences in that region.
