First Kings of Europe draws on collections from more than two dozen museums and archaeological institutes in the Balkan Peninsula of Europe to explore how a small number of individuals established tremendous power and influence over others. The Field Museum’s NEH-supported exhibition presents archeological finds that have never been shown in North American and span 8,000 years ago during the Neolithic Period and ending 2,500 years ago in the world of Iron Age kings. The collection includes weapons, jewelry, and tools that tell the story of how individuals gained power and influence by amassing wealth and controlling trade, technology, rituals, and warfare.

The Chicago Sun-Times reviewed First Kings of Europe, marveling at the breadth of artifacts included in the exhibition.  Read an essay about the exhibition at NEH’s Humanities magazine.
