The Nelson-Atkins Museum and the Linda Hall Library have been awarded NEH Climate Smart funds to create a Cultural Eco-District that encompasses the heart of downtown Kansas City, Missouri. The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art is recognized as one of the finest art museums in the country for its expansive collections and cultural festivals, and its consortium partner, the Linda Hall Library, is an internationally renowned science research center.

The Nelson-Atkins and Linda Hall Library will hire external consultants to conduct a comprehensive building system operational review that will identify environmental impact and methods for climate resiliency. The proposed project will identify cost effective, sustainable measures to reduce the carbon footprint of the cultural eco-district.

The climate smart planning will help to lower costs related to energy use, which will allow for more mission-focused spending at all participating organizations within the Eco-District. The project will result in the creation of planning documents that aim to establish a precedent for other humanities organizations to follow.
