The goal of Illuminating the Past: A Summer Institute on Multispectral Imaging and Cultural Heritage Preservation is two-fold: to familiarize participants with multispectral imaging technology and to share a newly affordable version of this approach. Participants will have the opportunity to work with and learn about this new system. Instructors will work with participants on image capture and processing on a wide variety of open-access approaches. We will discuss related imaging technologies, such as the increasingly affordable and commonplace approaches to 3D modeling through photography and design. Additionally, it is impossible to understand this digital work without the humanities training necessary to work with physical objects. Instructors will work with students to interpret a wide range of texts from various time periods and cultures. Most importantly, participants will leave with one of the small portable cameras, a full set of lenses, funding to visit an archive of their choice, support their research throughout the summer and develop a project for which they will submit a write-up to be included in a collected edition.
The institute aims to include participants from across the academic spectrum, including those in tenured and tenure-track positions, community college professionals, precariously employed faculty, graduate students, librarians, secondary educators, and archivists.
In order to create a cohort that includes individuals from various backgrounds and career stages, participants will receive funding to cover travel, lodging, and meals costs during the in-person portion of the Institute in Colorado Springs.
Additionally, participants will receive individual stipends to help cover travel expenses to an archive of their choice after the in-person week to conduct research and develop their projects. This stipend is intended to support participant in their digital humanities endeavors that include non-destructive technology.
