Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, New York Public Library

The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, a research unit of The New York Public Library, is recognized as one of the leading institutions of its kind. For 90 years, the Center has collected, preserved, and provided access to materials documenting black life, and promoted the study and interpretation of the history and culture of peoples of African descent. The Center’s collections include manuscript collections, bound volumes, microforms, photographic images, and serials from the United States, Canada, the Caribbean, South America, Africa, Europe, India, and Australia.

In addition to its role as a leading repository, the Schomburg Center is also a vibrant cultural hub that hosts a wealth of educational programs, exhibitions, concerts, film screenings, seminars, and community events. Since 1986, the Schomburg Center’s Scholars-in-Residence Program has awarded fellowships to academics whose research and writing on black history and culture would benefit from extended access to the Center’s resources.

The Program selects its fellows annually through a competitive process lead by a committee of experts with national and international reputations in the fields of black history and culture. Benefits of the fellowship include: a six-month stipend, use of a furnished office space at the Schomburg Center, and access to research assistants and advice from the Center’s curatorial staff. Fellows are also encouraged to take advantage of the scholarly atmosphere the Center provides by participating in colloquia, seminars, and conferences hosted at the Center.
