Announcement of Awardees for Start-Up and Institutes Grants

We are very pleased to announce that the German Research Foundation (DFG) and NEH will continue the Bilateral Digital Humanities Program in 2010. As in past years, we will offer two opportunities under this joint grant program. The deadline will be November 16, 2010 for projects starting in June 2011.

Applicants interested in funding for up to two bilateral symposia or workshops in order to initiate or intensify contact between distinguished scholars, junior researchers, scientists, librarians, information professionals, and others working on digital humanities projects should apply to DFG/NEH Bilateral Digital Humanities Program: Digital Symposia and Workshops.

Proposals for Bilateral Symposia or Workshops can focus on any area of the digital humanities, including:

• capacity building or networking workshops preparing for future more intensified bilateral collaboration based around a single theme, technology, media form or humanities discipline;
• comparing the needs of researchers in both the U.S. and Germany and their uses of digitized resources; and
• exploring possible and existing use of information technology in the humanities in both communities.

Applicants who wish to enhance digital humanities collections by adding resources, uniting split collections, or building joint infrastructure or tools should apply to DFG/NEH Bilateral Digital Humanities Program: Enriching Digital Collections.

Proposals for digitization projects could include any of the following areas:

• new digitization projects and pilot projects;
• the addition of important materials to existing digitization projects; and
• the development of infrastructure and tools to enhance the use of digitized resources and support international digitization work.

Collaboration between U.S. and German partners is a key requirement for each of these grant categories. Each application must have one German partner, and one U.S. partner, and there must be a project coordinator from each country. The partners will collaborate to write a single application package, which the U.S. partner will submit to the NEH and the German partner will submit to the DFG.
